Personal Statement:
A well-written personal statement is the most effective means of communication with the Admissions Committee. Applicants may use the personal statement to provide insight into their general background and the motivation they can bring to graduate studies. The personal statement should clearly indicate how the student's interest in a MA, PhD, or Certificate fits with department's research expertise. It also serves as a sample of the student's writing ability.
Recommendation Letter:
Three letters of recommendation: At least one letter (and preferably more) must be from a professor who can attest to the applicant's academic ability, interests and promise in graduate study. Letters should be submitted by the recommenders via the Graduate School's on-line application system.
